Thomas Allom 1804 – 72 was the most prolific of the topographic artists. He was articled to Francis Goodwin an Architect for seven years. He was as much an architect as artist and in the employ of Messrs Virtue & Co he furnished the drawings for the series of illustrated works upon which his reputation rests. Amongst these are Cumberland and Westmorland, Devonshire and Cornwall, Scotland, France, Constantinople, Asia Minor, and China.

Certain plates were traded and are found in various other works and with variations to the imprints;
Variation 1 issued in proof form on India paper 1831 for Cornwall;
Variation 11 Certain plates had the titles altered and corrected 1832;
Variation 111 Fisher & Son issued at this time yearly Drawing Room Scrapbook’s where he selected odd Alloms for insertion with new imprint dates up to 1835;
Variation 1V. The firm of Fisher was taken over by Peter Jackson & Co in 1840 and any of their reissues have this imprint without a date;
Variarion V A few of the more popular views are found at the top of letterheads;
Variation VI A few only of the plates survived and were printed in Heidleburg for a German work on the
